How To Take A Tape Lift Sample
What you need: clear tape, zip lock type bags or slide box.
- Depress a piece of clear tape to mold or suspected area. Lift off a nickel size portion. An area about a half inch square portion of the tape will be analyzed. Ensure there are no folds or wrinkles on the tape where the sample lies. You may want to sample places where there are stains of visible mold growth, damp materials like wallboard, and dusty surface areas that to see what may have fallen out of the air.
- Place each sample to be tested into separate zip lock or airtight bags. Stick the tape directly to the inside of the baggie. Do not stick the tape back on itself. You can also stick the tape down on a glass side and then place the slide into a slide container or an airtight bag.
- Record the location of each sample. If there are multiple samples, write a unique number and description to distinguish each sample. Another option is to photograph each location.
How To Take An Air Sample
What you need: Air-o-cell = a high volume pump (15Lpm) and Air-o-cell cassettes
Allergenco = Allergenco sampling unit, greased slides and slide protector box
Air-o-cell Sampling Procedure:
- Calibrate the pump to 15 LPM
- Open the round end of cassette and attach it to the pump
- Open the square end of the cassette
- Sample for 5 to 10 minutes at 15 LPM; first sample inside and then sample outdoors.
- Wall cavity samples should be run for only 1 to 2 minutes
- Replace stickers on both ends of the cassettes and label the samples with a sample number, location, and volume
Allergenco Sampling Procedure: Please refer to the owner’s manual supplied by the manufacturer.
How To Take A Bulk Sample
What you need: a cutting tool such as scissors or knife, zip lock bags
- Cut about 1 square inch of material, which is about the size of a quarter. Use gloves, or use the plastic bag like a glove, to avoid touching the sample
- Place the sample in a zip lock bag
- Record the location of each sample. If there are multiple samples, write a unique number and description to distinguish each sample. Another option is to photograph each location.
